Man United reluctant to trigger extension clause of £200,000-a-week star

Manchester United have not triggered a 12-month extension clause in David De Gea’s contract as they fear it could ultimately pave the way for The 28-year-old to leave as he is out of contract at the end of the season.

Manchester United had been confident of agreeing a new long-term deal with David De Gea after opening negotiations with his agent at the start of the year.

However, the club’s patchy form – combined with the uncertainty over Jose Mourinho’s position – has forced the Spaniard into re-thinking his future at Old Trafford.

Jose Mourinho is desperate to keep the goalkeeper, but he recently reneged on previous statements about the Spaniard’s future by revealing he was ‘not confident’ he would sign a new deal to stay at the club.

With such uncertainty hanging over the future of their most prized asset, the Red Devils have the option of extending the Spaniard’s stay by triggering a 12-month extension clause in his contract.

However, the club view such an option as an acceptance of defeat in their attempt to convince David De Gea to sign a new, longer deal.

United will leave a decision on De Gea’s extension until late December when, they’ll be forced into triggering the clause as he’d be able to sign a pre-contract agreement with suitors in January, with Juventus closely monitoring.
