JOSE MOURINHO has astonishingly accused four of his Manchester United players of lacking 'character' ahead of his side's clash against Crystal Palace this weekend.

United have had a disappointing season so far - having lost four of their opening 12 fixtures and 12 points behind bitter rivals Man City already.

Shaw is one of the players pinpointed to be needing better attitude

Mourinho in particular has been under increased pressure this term - with rumours he was to be replaced by Zinedine Zidane circulating earlier this term amid a fallout with star man Paul Pogba.

But the Red Devils have shown a mini revival in recent games - and although they were outclassed by bitter rivals City last time out, they have won three of their last five league matches.

They also produced a stunning comeback against Juventus in the Champions League.

But the Portuguese boss still thinks some of his younger players need to show a better attitude.

Marcus Rashford and Jesse Lingard are also among the four

The 55-year-old said Luke Shaw, Anthony Martial, Jesse Lingard and Marcus Rashford all need to show better character.

Speaking to Spanish TV channel Univision, he said: "They are lacking maturity.

"And let me be clear when I say maturity, I mean maturity on a personal level.

"We had more men, we were more mature, we were more prepared for life, we were less protected.

"They are spoilt kids now, the kids of today have a different life, an easier environment and I’m talking about the people around the players.

"These people give them too much affection and too many excuses. People mature much more slowly now.

Manchester United face Crystal Palace this weekend

"Luke Shaw, he’s got big potential but doesn’t know how to behave. Big potential, yes, big potential.

"We’re talking about Luke Shaw, Martial, Lingard, Rashford – young, big potential, but at the end of the day it results in the word I cannot say, but you use it a lot here… character, personality, they lack a little."

Mourinho and United are next in action at home against Crystal Palace on Saturday.

The match kicks off at 3pm and you can follow all the action on the SunSport LIVE blog.
